Läsvärd!

Trots att jag inte är någon anhängare av science fiction så är jag fascinerad av böcker om utopiska samhällen — av vilka det finns en hel del hos Gutenberg.

Förmodligen skulle man kunna ägna en stor del av sitt liv åt att studera alla dessa framtidsdrömmar, för de är många, de äldsta man känner till skrevs redan före vår tideräknings början. Dit har jag inte hunnit än.

För ögonblicket läser jag Elizabeth Burgoyne Corbetts bok "Amazonia: A Foretaste of the Future", en bok som kom ut 1889, men utspelar sig 2472. 

Boken skrevs i glödhet vrede över att en kollega, och därtill en kvinna, skrivit ett öppet brev som publicerades i en litterär tidskrift. Brevet med titeln "An Appeal Against Female Suffrage" var skrivet av den välkända författaren Mary Augusta Ward, och undertecknat av mer än hundra kvinnor. 

Om detta berättar Elizabeth utförligt i bokens förord, där hon bland annat skriver: "It is always noticeable that the less brains and claim for distinction a lady possesses herself, and the less actual cause she has for self-glorification, the higher and the more arrogantly does she hold her head above her fellows, and the more prone is she to despise and depreciate every woman who recognises a nobler aim in life than that of populating the world with offspring as imbecile as herself.

Il va sans dire that there are thousands of ladies to whom the last remark is scarcely applicable. Gentle in manners, and yielding in disposition, they are perfectly 3satisfied with the existing order of things, and quite believe the doctrine that man in his arrogance has laid down, that he is the God-ordained lord of creation, and that implicit obedience to his whims and fancies is the first duty of woman."

Så kom den futuristiska romanen "Amazonia" till — här beskrivs ett socialistiskt samhälle styrt av kvinnor. Män tillåts att leva där men får inte ha några politiska befattningar, skälet som anges är att "masculine government has always held openings for the free admission of corruption, injustice, immorality, and narrow-minded, self-glorifying bigotry." 

I det här samhället är alla vegetarianer och praktiserar eutanasi, de får sin energi från hundar (jag har inte hunnit så långt än, men jag har förstått att hundarna stryker med på kuppen) blir 2 meter långa och lever i hundratals år. 

Det är inte en lång bok, 146 sidor, men tycker du det verkar för mastigt, så läs åtminstone förordet!
