The Make-Believe Man - novellutmaningen -19

1. Läs en novell som utspelar sig vid kusten — "The Make-Believe Man", av Richard Harding Davis

Först var jag osäker på om detta var en kort roman eller en lång novell — men så hittade jag den under "Short stories" i en förteckning över författarens verk. Jag valde att lyssna på en uppläsning av berättelsen, vilket tog drygt en timme och tjugo minuter. En mycket bra brittisk uppläsning, av vad jag uppfattade som en genomförkyld kvinna, när hon som vanligt avslutade uppläsningen med att tala om när och var den var gjord, lade hon till "mitt i den värsta allergisäsongen". Alltså av precis samma anledning som jag valde att lyssna istället för att läsa med rinnande ögon.

En rätt otrolig, men nöjsam, historia som utspelar sig vid kusten och på havet mellan New York City och Connecticut.

Som nog framkommit av mina inlägg här, är jag en stor vän av böcker om etikett — det vill säga, att läsa dem snarare än att tillämpa vad jag läst.

Jag trodde att jag var hopplöst bakåtsträvande och efter min tid, men hörde alldeles nyss på radion att det är i allra högsta grad korrekt att hålla reda på hur man ska bete sig. Så här kommer några utdrag ur J. L. Saxons bok "Umgängeskonst – levnadskonst" från 1911.

Telefonering

Vid telefonering skall du börja med att tala om vilken du är och sedan artigt fråga: "Vem är det jag har nöjet tala med?"

Jag finner det intressant att han tilltalar läsaren med du!

Om du vid telefonering genom felkoppling kommer till orätt ställe, så säger du: "Jag finner, att det är felkopplat och ber om ursäkt för att jag besvärar". Och så ringer du av helt lugnt; inte så häftigt att den du talat vid ej hinner hänga på telefonluren.

Det finns personer, som äro ohövliga mot dem, som de sålunda genom en olyckshändelse kommit att besvära, och begynna att formligen gräla på dem. Det är naturligen blott tarvligt folk, som låter sitt elaka lynne gå ut över fullkomligt oskyldiga. Felet är ju telefonistens och ej dens, som blivit narrad till telefonen.

Är telefonisten känd för att vara slarvig, bör hon allvarligt erinras därom. Beror felet däremot på en ren olyckshändelse, så säg ett överseende: "Fröken hade oturen att koppla fel åt mig nyss". Det kommer henne att fördubbla sin uppmärksamhet. Tror du inte, att du har anledning till ett sådant överseende, så gör ett besök på ett par minuter å en telefonstation.

Är det nummer, du begär, upptaget, skall du naturligtvis ej låta din förargelse däröver - om du nu är barnslig nog att bli förargad över något sådant - gå ut över telefonisten. Hon har ju ingen skuld i att en person står och talar vid den du önskar träffa.

Kom för övrigt ihåg, att en telefonering alltid åsamkar mottagaren större besvär än ett skriftligt meddelande.

Telefoneringen kan komma under måltiden, under det han har besök, medan han har brådska med något arbete, medan han sover middag o. s. v. - alltså på för mottagaren olägliga tider. Det är klart, att han ej skall tycka om att bli störd på detta sätt och kanske på grund därav lämnar ett avvisande svar.

Edward Edwin Foot tycks aldrig ha varit en diktare på modet, det finns nästan ingenting skrivet om honom på nätet. En enda artikel hittar jag där Edward nämns i första stycket — och jag är högst osäker på tillförlitligheten i dess utsago. I all synnerhet som ingen annan nämner Edward i samband med dessa "nötter".

Men allt letande ger mig en rolig bonuskunskap:

The sign is historically equal to the asterisks used by Aristarchus of Samothrace at the Mouseion at Alexandria. It was used for the critical editions of Homer's writings where it "marked a verse incorrectly repeated in another passage" and was used together with other signs such as the obelus.

 He modified the system of the ancient Greek textual signs (semeia) and from some point on these signs were called Aristarchian symbols. The historical connection of his name to literary criticism has created the term aristarch for someone who is a judgmental critic.

Aristarchus of Samothrace (Greek: Ἀρίσταρχος ὁ Σαμόθραξ; c. 220 – c. 143 BC) was a grammarian noted as the most influential of all scholars of Homeric poetry. He was the librarian of the library of Alexandria and seems to have succeeded his teacher Aristophanes of Byzantium in that role.

gout (n.)

joint disease, c. 1200, from Old French gote "a drop, bead; the gout, rheumatism" (10c., Modern French goutte), from Latin gutta "a drop," in Medieval Latin "gout," a word of unknown origin. In old medicine the disease was thought to be caused by drops of viscous humors seeping from the blood into the joints, which turns out to be close to the modern scientific explanation. It often was caused by the drinking of heavy or sweet wines, or excessive beer drinking combined with insufficient food.
