June. Forest, 1918

"I expect we should not like a world of nothing but June... But it would take a long time. Thirty days is a very small amount for June."
                                                        Gladys Taber

"Vad är tiden för något?"

Tiden
"Vad är tiden för något?" sa barnet,
och frågan tycktes mig svår.
Tid, det är världen som rör sig.
Tid, det är livet som går.
Men de allra elementäraste tingen
är ting som just ingen förstår.

Time Passing
Patrick St. Germain

Here is a strange thing. In summer I always make plans for those long winter nights. I say blithely, "Well, in the long winter evenings I am really going to learn to knit socks. There will be time, then, to reread all of Shakespeare and the Elizabethan poets." On a long winter evening we can refile the phonograph records, straighten the game cupboard, and really throw out those incomplete checker sets and nibbled game boards. A thousand small, niggling jobs we can dash off, I think, in winter.
Every single year I go through this happy reasoning and every year, in surprise, I face the fact in January, that those long winter evenings are pure fiction.
... What does become of those evenings? I often wonder. Because I find myself, in January, saying cheerfully, and with hope, "Now when the summer evenings come, and it stays light so long, I can really catch up with those odd jobs. I'll just wait for summer."
I suspect it is just a human weakness to look forward to a season with plenty of leisure, a tranquil space between regular jobs. Much the way we used to anticipate nice restful vacations. And then actually we wore ourselves out on those nice restful vacations.

Så väl jag känner igen mig.

Citatfunderingar

Ett av Thoreaus mer kända citat lyder: "Time is but the stream I go fishing in".
"Time is but the stream I go fishing in", said Thoreau. "I drink at it; but while I drink, I see the sandy bottom and detect how shallow it is. Its thin current slides away, but eternity remains." I'm not sure I understand this, for I'm no philosopher, but it streches my mind. The days I live now in the beginning of spring are certainly transient, dusk falls before I have sufficiently enjoyed the dew on the grass in early morning. We busy ourselves with all the things that must, we think, be done at once. "But eternity remains" said Thoreau. Days on the calendar come and go, but God is timeless. Love and faith and hope know no season, they are themselves, I think eternity.
And in a sense, the miracle of spring is eternal also.
"Let us spend one dayas as deliberately as Nature," said Thoreau. Nature never hurries, season moves gentley into season, day into night. If we would have less tensions, less anxieties. We would find, I am sure, reserves of peace in ourselves.
And be renewed, as spring renewes the frozen earth.
