Ta med en pion på utflykten

Eller åtminstone roten. Det är nämligen både picknickens dag och pionens dag i dag. Jag läser i min pionbok:
Alice Harding, the American peony expert, mentioned herbaceous peony roots being used as food in AD 536, "surley" she wrote, "... the prototype pf some of our modern breakfast foods." In the cause of thorough research I have cooked and eaten as small nugget of peony root. It was fibrous and starchy and had a smell and flavour reminiscent of turnip soaked in wallpaper paste mixed with turpentine. I would prefer not to have it for breakfast every day.

Ha en trevlig utflykt, kanske med något smakligare än en pionrot!

“Once lively peonies now
wind-weary, and ragged
at the edges, hang their heavy
crowns; rain on their backs,
one final act, before
detaching from the stem
and falling down.”
