I all anspråkslöshet

Varje vecka läser jag, med stor behållning, "The Word Guys"(Rob Kyff) språkliga spalt - förutom att jag lär mig massor av honom, så får mig alltid att dra på munnen.  Språkherdar i alla länder ondgör över ungefär samma språkgrodor — den här veckan tar han upp missbruket av ett ord som jag ondgjorde mig över här på bloggen för några år sedan:

--Humble pie: Why do winners of everything from Oscars and Osterizers say they're "humbled"? Copping an award doesn't make you feel humble; it makes you feel honored. Some linguists defend this usage, saying the victors are emphasizing their lowly status compared with competitors or previous recipients. Come on! It's false modesty worthy of Uriah Heep. Ironically, Michigan Gov. Rick Snyder, under fire for his mishandling of the Flint water-supply crisis, got it right when he said he had been "humbled by this experience." And how. 

humble pie (n.) 

to eat humble pie (1830) is from umble pie (1640s), pie made from umbles "edible inner parts of an animal" (especially deer), considered a low-class food. The similar sense of similar-sounding words (the "h" of humble (adj.) was not then pronounced) converged to make the pun. Umbles is Middle English numbles "offal," with loss of n- through assimilation into preceding article.
